To improve your chances of being mentioned in ChatGPT and other AI search tools, start with the questions your customers ask and the sources shown in the answers. Make your own product information clear, then approach relevant publishers where your brand would be a useful addition.

Here is how to turn that research into a practical outreach plan and check what changes.

Build a question set around real decisions

Start with a limited group of questions a prospective customer might ask. Cover several intents rather than repeating keywords:

  • category discovery: “What tools help with X?”
  • comparison: “How do A and B differ for a small team?”
  • alternatives: “What are alternatives to A for a regulated company?”
  • capability: “Which products support requirement Y?”
  • evidence: “What should I check before choosing this type of service?”

Record the exact wording, date, product or interface tested, broad location where relevant, answer, links or citations shown, and whether the source actually supports the claim. This is an observation log, not a universal ranking report.

Google explains that its AI search features can use related searches to find supporting pages and that eligibility as a supporting link relies on the same foundations as Search: indexability, snippet eligibility and compliance with policies. It does not require special AI markup. See Google's official guidance for AI features and its newer generative AI optimization guide.

Inspect sources at page level

For every recurring source, ask:

Check What to record
Relevance Which question or subtopic the page answers
Evidence Whether its claims cite documentation, testing or firsthand experience
Freshness Publication and update signals; whether products and facts remain current
Independence Editorial, vendor-owned or sponsored, with disclosures where applicable
Opportunity A specific omission, correction or useful addition you can substantiate

Do not assume a cited domain endorses every answer. Open the exact page and compare its text with the generated claim. A citation can be adjacent to a statement without proving all of it.

Turn patterns into editorial work

Imagine a hypothetical scheduling product. Across a small prompt set, independent guides repeatedly compare calendar integrations, but none explains data residency. The company has public documentation for regional hosting. A defensible next step is to identify relevant guides where that criterion would help the audience, then offer accurate source material. It is not to send every cited publisher a generic request to “mention us for AI visibility.”

Prioritize opportunities where three facts align: the publisher serves the right reader, the missing information affects the decision, and the company can prove its claim. This is where editorial outreach can support AI visibility research.

Keep technical foundations in scope

Editorial research cannot compensate for pages that are inaccessible or unclear. Google states that crawlable, indexed content and ordinary SEO fundamentals remain relevant to its AI features. Bing likewise recommends keeping sitemaps accurate so search systems can discover current URLs; see Bing's official sitemap guidance for AI-powered search.

Review whether important facts live on stable public URLs, whether product pages state who the product is for, and whether claims have dates and evidence. Fix contradictions between documentation, pricing pages and third-party descriptions. These changes help human editors assess the product too.

Avoid scaled pages, artificial mentions and purchased links intended to manipulate results. Google's AI guidance explicitly warns against mass content made to influence rankings or generative answers and against inauthentic mentions. Its spam policies apply across web search results.

Measure what the evidence permits

Repeat the same question set periodically, preserving the old observations. Track which sources recur, which pages disappear, where factual descriptions improve and whether referral traffic follows published inclusions. Bing's AI Performance reporting, for eligible sites, describes citations and cited pages without treating them as ranking or authority; that is a useful model for cautious interpretation. Read Bing's official announcement.

A source snapshot cannot establish causation. AI outputs vary by system, question, location and time, so neither research nor outreach can guarantee a mention. If a brand appears after an editorial update, report the sequence without claiming that one caused the other. The durable output is a clearer public footprint: useful pages, accurate third-party descriptions and evidence an editor can verify.

If you want a focused source review tied to your market, request an outreach review.
